 String Art ( Nail and Thread Art)

String art or Nail and Thread Art is defined as art made with thread strung between points to create beautiful artwork. 

It is a simple and fun way to make your own artwork. it doesn't require any special skills.

Wooden boards are most commonly used for string art. Paint your piece of wood with acrylic paint or cover the wood tightly with a black cloth which gives you a perfect background. Secure it on all sides with glue  or you can nail the edges also. That is your canvas for the artwork.

Take a print out of the pattern or draw your image in a paper, place it on wood where you want to nail it.  Secure the design to the surface with tape on the edges. Hammer the nails into the surface following the image on the paper, place the nails as close as you want. Hammer each nail such that some part of the nail protrude from the surface. All the nails should be of the same height, I grip the nails with a plier to make it easy to hammer. Once all the nails are in, pull the paper up through the nails.

Next is filling the pattern with string. you can use any kind of thread or string you like, I have worked with embroidery thread as well as glossy silver string, both are equally good, if the quality of thread is good, the work flow is smooth. You can choose the color according to the image you are selecting.

Determine your starting point and tie a knot around that nail. start wrapping the string around nails to fill up the space.

Continue weaving in and out of the nails until you're satisfied with the outcome. If it turns out your string is too short, just take your new string and tie the ends together. Once you are done, knot the string on the nail and cut off the excess string.

If you are trying to create a specific Geometric pattern, you must follow the rules to get the desired pattern, otherwise there is no specific way to do this, you just need to fill in the space.
